What Does Holistic Health Mean Anyways?

As a Holistic Nutritionist, I get asked all the time; "what does Holistic mean anyways? " Apparently inquiring minds want to know! Well by definition as of today:

adjective: holistic

  1. characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.

characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.

And that is a great definition! As a Holistic Nutritionist, I recognize that the body works synergistically, and wholly. I understand that everything is connected – intimately, and it is nearly impossible to affect one part of the body without having a ripple effect on the other. So keeping that in mind, we can understand that the mind affects the body. The body affects emotion. The sprit affects the body. Our immediate environment affects our thoughts…and so on and so on.

We can also then safely say that anything we do to impact one part of the body will have an effect on another part of the body, as we have already agreed that everything is connected. So then with that mindset, we could determine that anything we do to help ourselves in any way, would have a positive effect on every part of ourselves, and anything that happens in a negative capacity would evoke a negative effect on every part of ourselves.

Holistic Health can encompass a variety of modalities or practices that promote balance, peacefulness, contentment, and fulfillment that facilitate healing, wellness and completeness. Nutrition makes up a big part of Health, but as everything is connected, surely we must expand our thinking to include anything that makes us feel well in any capacity. Where are you lacking?

Hmm. Food for thought!

…Stay Healthy Friends! :0)
