Have you ever heard of Prebiotics? What about Probiotics? Are you wondering what they are and what they do?
Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed beneficial gut bacteria and promote their growth (e.g., inulin, fructooligosaccharides).
Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria found in certain foods and supplements (e.g., Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium).
Prebiotics are found in foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and whole grains.
Probiotics are found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut.
Together, prebiotics and probiotics support gut health, digestion, and immune function (a combination is called synbiotics).
Prebiotics and probiotics are important because they help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a key role in overall health. Here's why they matter:
Support digestion: Probiotics aid in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, while prebiotics fuel the good bacteria that help with this process.
Boost immune function: A healthy gut helps regulate the immune system and may reduce the risk of infections and inflammation.
Improve gut health: They can help prevent or manage issues like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Enhance mental health: The gut and brain are connected (the gut-brain axis), and a balanced microbiome is linked to better mood and cognitive function.
May prevent chronic diseases: A healthy gut environment is associated with a lower risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.
In short, prebiotics and probiotics help keep your gut — and by extension, your whole body — functioning well.
