Have you ever heard of Prebiotics? What about Probiotics? Are you wondering what they are and what they do?

  • Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed beneficial gut bacteria and promote their growth (e.g., inulin, fructooligosaccharides).

  • Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria found in certain foods and supplements (e.g., Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium).

  • Prebiotics are found in foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and whole grains.

  • Probiotics are found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

  • Together, prebiotics and probiotics support gut health, digestion, and immune function (a combination is called synbiotics).

Prebiotics and probiotics are important because they help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a key role in overall health. Here's why they matter:

  • Support digestion: Probiotics aid in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, while prebiotics fuel the good bacteria that help with this process.

  • Boost immune function: A healthy gut helps regulate the immune system and may reduce the risk of infections and inflammation.

  • Improve gut health: They can help prevent or manage issues like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Enhance mental health: The gut and brain are connected (the gut-brain axis), and a balanced microbiome is linked to better mood and cognitive function.

  • May prevent chronic diseases: A healthy gut environment is associated with a lower risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.

In short, prebiotics and probiotics help keep your gut — and by extension, your whole body — functioning well.

Food for thought!
