Fluoride In Our Water? No Thank You!

In response to a radio segment on the local 570 News today, I would like to add some information. The topic up for discussion was fluoride being added back into our water system in Waterloo Region.

First of all – IF – and that is a big IF, you could prove that fluoride’s positive effects on teeth alone outweighs it’s negative effects on teeth alone, would it be worth the detrimental effects on the rest of the body? I will circle back to the argument on teeth alone, but for now – here is why we DO NOT want fluoride back in our water.

Fluoride is what we refer to as an ‘endocrine disrupter’. For your knowledge, the endocrine system of the body governs hormones. Hormones are basically ‘chemical messengers’ if you will, that deliver messages to many of the body’s organ systems to keep the body working properly. Now most people consider hormones to be sex hormones, like estrogen and testosterone. We know these work with the ovaries and testes to develop our bodies into adults and procreate among other things. But hormones also include those such as Insulin – which regulates blood sugar and digestion. Thyroxine which works with the Thyroid, contributing to major processes like metabolism and bone building. Epinephrine and Noreinephrine which work with your adrenals, regulating your body’s ability to respond in an emergency, and cortisol which helps regulate your sleep cycle. These are just a few of the hormones regulated by the endocrine system, and a few ‘jobs’ that hormones do. So on that note – if fluoride disrupts the ease at which those processes work, or stop them from working all together, we have a big problem.

Fluoride also displaces copper in the body. Displace meaning to get rid of, or stop it from being absorbed. Copper is an essential trace mineral necessary for survival. It’s found in all body tissues and is necessary for, among other things, red blood cell formation and maintaining nerve cells in the immune system. Crucial. Back in the good ol’ days, when everyone had copper piping, this wasn’t too big of an issue. Now as plastic piping is the norm, copper is no longer bountiful.

Fluoride has been found to decrease our bone quality. We know after several studies on rats, that what once appeared to be an increase in density, was actually an increase in ash – and actually hurts the integrity of the bone causing breakdown and weakness.

Fluoride has been found to negatively affect brain quality. We know also after study on rats, that neurotoxicity takes place. That means – in simple terms – brain poisoning. In human studies on baby’s brains, those mothers with greater exposure to fluoride while pregnant showed lower IQ levels in their children between 6 and 12 years of age. On other studies, fluoride was observed to accumulate in both muscle and brains of rats, leading to a lowering of the body’s natural ability to defend itself against cancer causing toxins!

Now the above studies I speak of are done with a comparable rate of exposure that we would get through our drinking water. Heaven forbid you are one of the millions who live in China or India, who have had a way higher exposure and now suffer serious and sometimes crippling bone diseases. If we allow fluoride back into our water systems – who’s to say we get a say in the amount that gets added?

To come back around to the effects of fluoride on actual teeth, I have one thing to say: If your jaw bones are too weak to hold your teeth in place, now weakened by fluoride - what good are your teeth going to be anyways?

Hmm. Food for thought!
