Eating Local. Eating with the Seasons.

Do you eat with the seasons? Do you eat locally? Eating seasonally and locally offers a bunch of health, environmental, and even emotional benefits. Here's the quick breakdown:

🌿 Health Benefits:

  • More nutrients: Seasonal produce is fresher and harvested at peak ripeness, meaning higher vitamin and antioxidant content.

  • Better taste: Food that's in season usually tastes richer and more vibrant.

  • Fewer chemicals: Local, in-season foods are less likely to need preservatives or heavy pesticides.

🌎 Environmental Benefits:

  • Lower carbon footprint: Local food doesn’t travel thousands of miles = less fuel and emissions.

  • Supports biodiversity: Seasonal farming tends to promote a more diverse ecosystem.

  • Less packaging waste: Local farmers often use minimal or reusable packaging.

💚 Community + Emotional Benefits:

  • Supports local farmers: Keeps money in your local economy.

  • Deeper connection to nature: You become more in tune with the natural rhythm of your environment.

  • More variety in your diet: Seasonal shifts naturally encourage diverse eating throughout the year.

Here is a list of what is in store for you at a local Farmer's Market:

  • Asparagus, beets, cabbage, cucumbers

  • Carrots, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, parsnips

  • Peppers, potatoes, radishes, rutabaga

  • Spinach, sprouts, squash, sweet potatoes

  • Tomatoes, apples, rhubarb, strawberries

Food for thought!
